Drill Information

  1. Pucks are placed a set distance apart just above the crease. Increasing the distance increases difficulty and forces the goalie to manage larger lateral pushes.
  2. The shooter skates in, takes the first shot, immediately adjusts their angle, and releases the second shot in rapid succession.

Coaching Focus Points

  • Set early — beat the shooter to the first puck with feet set and chest square.
  • Controlled save and rebound awareness — track the puck off the blade and manage rebounds to the corners.
  • Efficient recovery — after the first save, recover using the shortest path (T-push, shuffle, or lateral release depending on distance).
  • Head leads the body — eyes snap to the second puck immediately after the first save.
  • Stay tall on recovery — maintain posture so you arrive balanced for the second shot.
  • Edge discipline — push with power but stop under control; avoid sliding past your angle.
  • Hands out in front — keep gloves active and forward to smother pucks, seal space, and prevent rebounds.

Shooter Focus Points

  • Quick release — the drill only works if the second shot comes fast; no stickhandling between pucks.
  • Accuracy over power — two precise shots are more valuable than two hard but uncontrolled ones.
  • Consistent approach speed — don't slow down between pucks; maintain flow.
  • Repetition with purpose — vary shot types: first low, second high; first blocker, second glove; etc.

USA Hockey Goaltending Gold Level Coach Certification

This website was developed as part of the USA Hockey Goaltending Gold Certification Program. All capstone projects for the program must improve the future of the position and produce a resource that will be shared and can be repeated by all coaches across the country. The goal of this website is to inform and equip clubs and coaches to best develop their goalies, and to help all goalies reach their full potential. This website lowers the barriers to all coaches becoming goalie coaches!
