Drill Information

Goalie starts standing at the top of the crease. Coach stands 10-15 feet out with a ringette/puck. Coach moves forward/backward and side-to-side. No shots in the base version - pure read and react.

  1. Forward Movement = Goalie Drops: When the coach moves toward the net, the goalie holds edges until coach enters the threat line, then drops into a controlled butterfly with hands out front, chest tall, and eyes on the blade.
  2. Backward Movement = Goalie Recovers: When the coach backs up, the goalie recovers to feet using proper mechanics and resets square and balanced in a standing stance.
  3. Lateral Movement = Goalie Shuffles/Power Push: When the coach moves side-to-side, the goalie shuffles/power pushes to stay square and maintain depth unless coach approaches again.
  4. Combine All Three: Coach mixes approach, retreat, lateral slides, fakes, and tempo changes. The goalie reads the ringette/puck, not the coach's feet.

USA Hockey Goaltending Gold Level Coach Certification

This website was developed as part of the USA Hockey Goaltending Gold Certification Program. All capstone projects for the program must improve the future of the position and produce a resource that will be shared and can be repeated by all coaches across the country. The goal of this website is to inform and equip clubs and coaches to best develop their goalies, and to help all goalies reach their full potential. This website lowers the barriers to all coaches becoming goalie coaches!
